Woolacombe Surf Life Saving youth team travelled through the snow to Millfield pool in Somerset last weekend to retain for the 4th year running the National Stillwater title. Over 18 clubs competed in the 50m pool from all over the country. Youth team Coach Richard Lark said "We are absolutely delighted. Full credit to Saunton they pushed us all the way, we had to be at our best to win. This was a day our big swimmers had to stand up and be counted, which they did backed up by other members of the team, this was an outstanding team performance. To win four National Ocean and Stillwater titles in succession shows a really high level of team spirit, commitment, skill and dedication. WOOLACOMBE YOUTH STORM TO VICTORY
In some of the worse conditions ever Woolacombe youth overcame strong cross winds and heavy showers and messy sea to power to victory in the Devon Youth Ocean Championships. Which started on Saturday and was completed on Tuesday evening after Saturdays events were halted after the worsen conditions made it to dangerous to continue.
The team secured its filth title in a row, excelling in every event.
14 year old Ellie Parker collected the U16 Ocean girl trophy and returning to form Fay Mills collected the U19 Ocean girl trophy.
Woolacombe coach Richard Lark says "All the competitors from every club should pat themselves on the back for their performances in very difficult conditions, they all showed high levels of surf skills throughout".
The Youth Section caters for members aged between 12-19 years.
We display and promote the highest standard of health and safety. We encourage through training youth development, education and fun within this section.
All young surf life savers are encouraged to learn all aspects of Surf lifesaving including, beach safety, fitness and teamwork. They are given the opportunity to be involved in club, regional and national competitions.
Throughout the season we run Beach Bronze and Silver Nars Cross Awards alongside our competitive training. We have over 45 youth members that train twice weekly. Over recent years 7 members have gained qualification in the Nars Beach Lifeguard.
Over the last three years we have established ourselves as the top competitive team in the country. Winning 2005, 2006 Ocean National titles and 2006, 2007 & 2008 Stillwater National titles.
Three of our young members were selected to represent Great Britain at last year's 2006 European Youth Championships. Three represented England in the Still Water Commonwealth Championships, and one member made the England Senior Squad.
We are the only club in Devon that has three qualified LEVEL One coaches under the new Surf Lifesaving Coaching Scheme.
To encourage all members to participate in club training, new equipment has been purchased through grant funding and to date over £30,000 has been awarded to our club.
We believe in equal opportunities for all members. We pride ourselves in encouraging each member to set and reach their individual potential whilst being a crucial and important team member.
